You may have a rule among your family members about no smoking in the house but there is always the chance company may not respect your wishes. Or perhaps you just got back from vacation and your house sitter took some liberties. If this happens to you, how do you get rid of the smell of cigarette smoke in your home? Open Windows to Air Out House
The first thing you will want to do is get some fresh air going through your home to help you get rid of the smell. When you have some time to be home for a while open your doors and windows. Leaving your windows and doors open lets nature take care of your smell on its own.
Boil Vinegar to Get Rid of Smoke Odor
You can use white vinegar or apple cider vinegar to help you get rid of the smell. There are a few different ways you can utilize the vinegar. First you can boil vinegar on your stove. This will help the vinegar diffuse throughout your house. If you have clothes that smell like cigarette smoke you can even steam the smell out of them by placing the smelly clothes above the heated vinegar. You can also use vinegar to clean surfaces that smell like smoke. Mix 2 cups of vinegar with a gallon of warm water. Take a clean rag and dip it into the mixture. Use the rag to scrub down surfaces that smell like. It can be safely used on walls, ceilings, floors, counters, and furniture. Another option for vinegar is to place small bowls of vinegar around the house. The vinegar will draw out the nasty smell of cigarette smoke and help you get rid of it. You may find that after you use vinegar to clean everything that the smell of smoke will be gone but now your home smells like vinegar. Baking soda can help take care of the vinegar smell without any problems. You can place boxes of baking soda in the rooms that smell and the baking soda will absorb the vinegar smell quickly.
Baking Soda Absorbs Cigarette Smoke Smells
Baking soda is another great household item that can help you get rid of the cigarette smell that your visitors left behind. You simply put baking soda on the carpet, rugs, and furniture that smells and let it sit for a few hours. If the smell is really strong you may want to leave the baking soda on for up to 24 hours. Then you simply vacuum up the baking soda. You can keep repeating this process until the smell is gone.
Coffee Grounds to Remove Smoke Odors
If you are a coffee drinker your coffee grounds can help you get rid of the cigarette smoke smell as well. Simply let the coffee ground dry, place them in small bowls, and set them around your house. Allow the coffee grounds to sit overnight. In the morning if the smell is still there get a new set of coffee grounds and repeat the process.
