How Often Should You Have Air Ducts & Vents Cleaned?
How often should you have your air ducts cleaned? Well, the answer will vary in each household and the home’s surrounding environment. Not every home is going to have the same level of contamination as the next home. Large families, and those with pet equals more contamination. Small households without pets can go longer in between air duct cleaning. Another major consideration is the environment and climate. If you live in a desert with a lot of wind as we have here in southern Nevada, you know we have a lot of dust that blows. This dirt can get sucked into the air conditioning system and into the air ducts. In general, an air duct system should be cleaned about every 2 to 4 years. However, there are a number of signs you will want to look for to know if your air ducts need cleaning now or in a few years from now. When the air conditioning system loses efficiency this could be due to dirty air ducts. When this occurs you will want to have the air ducts cleaned. If there is a lot of dust in your home or you can see dust inside your air ducts and around the air vents, you will want to have the air ducts cleaned.
Does Cleaning Air Ducts Really Make a Difference?
There are many reasons why you will want to have your air ducts cleaned. According to the National Air Duct Association (NADCA) there are several reason to have the air ducts cleaned such as:
• Pet Hair & Dander – For those that have pets running around inside the house know they will shed a lot of hair and dander. The hair and dander can accumulate inside the air ducts. This can lead to poor indoor air quality and a less efficient air conditioning system.
• Allergic or Asthmatic – If you or your kids or other household members suffers from allergies or asthma, you will want to maintain great air quality inside your home. You can have better indoor air quality with regular air duct cleaning and an air purification system.
• Recent Fire or Water Damage, or Renovations – If you have had some major damage such as from water or fire it can affect your air duct. Even renovations can lead to major contamination within the air duct system. After a fire, ash and soot may have gotten inside the air ducts. Flooding can lead to mold and renovation stirs up a lot of dust and debris. If your home has gone through any of these scenarios recently, have your air ducts cleaned.
• Indoor Smoking – It is never a great idea to smoke inside the home. When smoking tobacco inside the home, ash and soot fills the air and will eventually end up inside the air ducts. Additionally, the particles from smoking can accumulate inside the home and lead to poor indoor quality.
